Crowns and bridges are porcelain or metal teeth, that cover over your existing teeth. They are fixed to your teeth and can only be removed by your dentist unlike dentures which can be easily removed from the mouth
A crown or hollow cap is used to cover the top of a tooth which has become damaged or decayed to a point where it cannot be restored by just filling. The crown recreates the shape of a broken down tooth allowing it to be useful in chewing. They also improve the appearance of the tooth.
Crowns are made from various materials with gold and metal alloys offering the most strength. Gold and metal crowns are mainly used for back teeth which are used most when chewing. Porcelain or ceramic crowns are not as strong but they can be colour matched to the surrounding teeth which, is excellent for the appearance of the front teeth. An excellent compromise is a metal structure with porcelain on top which is tooth coloured and strong.
The dentist may suggest a bridge if you have a tooth or teeth missing. A false tooth is used to replace a tooth that you are missing. The false tooth is attached to one or more of your existing teeth by a crown or a metal wing.
Bridges are also made from various materials which vary in both appearance and cost. Ceramic and porcelain bridges like crowns can be colour matched to the same colour as the surrounding teeth.
